1^st place: Hudson Yards (New York City, US)

The most expensive construction project in history is Hudson Yards in Manhattan, with a total cost that reached $25 billion by 2020. The massive complex was built directly above an active rail yard, greatly complicating construction and increasing costs. Phase one is now complete, including office towers, residential buildings, a leisure center, and retail galleries. Phase two, which will focus on additional residential development, lies ahead. Given the scale and complexity of the project—as well as rising prices for materials and labor—the final cost of Hudson Yards could climb even higher.

2^nd place: Abraj Al Bait (Mecca, Saudi Arabia)

The Abraj Al Bait complex in Mecca, completed in 2012, cost the Saudi government $15 billion. Designed to accommodate the millions of pilgrims who visit the holy city each year, it has become a key component of Mecca's urban infrastructure. Its central landmark is the 601-meter Clock Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world. The tower houses a hotel with 1,650 rooms overlooking the Grand Mosque, with an observatory and astronomical center located on the upper floors.

3^rd place: Marina Bay Sands (Singapore)

One of Singapore’s most recognizable landmarks is the Marina Bay Sands complex opened in 2010, with a construction cost of $5.5 billion. Designed by architect Moshe Safdie, it features three 55-story towers connected by the SkyPark, a floating observation deck 200 meters above ground. The complex includes a massive hotel, a casino, museums, over 270 retail shops and restaurants, a theater, ice rink, and the world’s largest infinity pool, stretching 150 meters. Marina Bay Sands has become a signature of Singapore’s skyline and a major tourism magnet in Southeast Asia.

4^th place: SoFi Stadium (Inglewood, US)

The SoFi Stadium in California is the most expensive sports venue in US history, with a construction cost just over $5 billion and completed in 2020 after four years of development. Spanning 288,000 square meters, the stadium seats over 70,000 spectators and is home to two NFL teams: the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers. This engineering marvel features a transparent roof, open-air sides, and a massive oval video board covering 6,500 square meters. The venue also hosts concerts, exhibitions, and other large events.

5^th place: Apple Park (Cupertino, US)

Apple’s main campus in California, known as Apple Park, was completed in 2017 and cost approximately $5 billion. Conceived by Steve Jobs, who aimed to create the best office in the world, the futuristic ring-shaped campus spans 260,000 square meters and accommodates 12,000 employees. Built with a focus on sustainability, it incorporates solar panels and a natural ventilation system. The building’s facade features curved glass panels, and it is surrounded by 6.4 kilometers of walking paths among drought-resistant trees.
